"Mental illness expansionism diverts us from examining a dehumanizing society. In addition to pathologizing normal behavior, the mental health profession also diverts us from examining a society that creates the ingredients�helplessness, hopelessness, passivity, boredom, fear, and isolation�that cause emotional difficulties."

I tend to agree with this ("Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure you are not, in fact, just surrounded by assholes."), and parts of the rest of it.

I am reminded of this story from 2004 - how the pharmaceutical industry convinced millions of Japanese people that something was wrong with them and buying their pills was the answer.
