Reviewing soda like I'm a wine geek: Mountain Dew Baja Blast

Very unusual nose to it - it's a lot like a Kool Aid (one of the color changing ones) or a nuevo-style Capri Sun, but is more floral and complex. It's professed flavor - lime - is not the dominant note, but it enjoys a prominent role in the Mountain Dew citrus symphony.

"Baja Blast" isn't really a great name for this. It's flavors are ones that we would normally associate with the tropics and "baja" is traditionally aligned with Mexican or Southwestern tastes like spiciness, heat. I'm not sure that this is particularly well suited to Taco Bell's food, which I do not eat. Yes, this would benefit from spicy food, but its ideal companion would be something that is less chalky and has more tooth - I'd think like a Cuban sandwich or a spicy hot dog.

The flavor profile is rich and deep. I've heard it compared to a Sprite Remix taste, but where Sprite Remix was sociable and talkative, Baja Blast is pensive and thoughtful. There's identifiable flavors - orange, some lemon, lime, grape, bubble gum. Beneath the fruit, there's a cream soda-like smoothness that rounds them all out and brings it together.

Because it is a fountain drink, it's mouth feel is less aggressive than what it would otherwise be. The carbonation is 'smaller' and it never really reaches the back of the mouth - it really plays on the front of the tongue. There's a dryness to it that is a little unexpected.

The Thing I Am Most Proud Of

I am most proud of the candy machine that I and a coworker at a pool raided. We had to work late nights and early weekend mornings, so we monkeyed with some coat hangers and liberated things from it. Slowly at first - we only took one or two things when we were hungry. It went largely unnoticed except for the few instances when people bought things from the slot we took it from and it was empty - prior to the guy filling it up. Then one weekend we decided to put and end to the whole thing and hit it up for the Big Score. Basically cleaned the thing out. It was like $40 worth of crap. Not just candy, either. There were stale Pop-Tarts and some Cheez Its.

I am most proud of this because it showed initiative, creative problem solving and a rebellious streak that is slowly dying inside of me.
