I had a swim coach who had a habit of proclaiming that whatever we were doing was the "best exercise." Running, pushups, didn't matter. In the end, it just undermined his credibility with me and I had a hard time taking him seriously.
I had a discussion about swim coaching the other day with someone and I think a better tactic for coaches is to say things that kind of confuse your athletes, but sound vaguely menacing or something:
-OUR BODIES ARE MADE FROM LIGHTNING BOLTS
-DRINK FROM THE CAULDRON OF FEAR BUT DO NOT GET DRUNK
-PAIN IS THE DIAPER AND YOU ARE A GROWN-UP NOW
-A POLAR BEAR CAN OUTSWIM YOU. YOU WILL BE EATEN.
-THE THUNDER INSIDE YOU WILL KILL YOU IF YOU STOP SWIMMING
-I AM THE CAPTAIN OF THE VIKING SHIP THAT IS INVADING THE HARBOR OF YOUR BRAIN
