One of the best days at work in a long time. I got in late, but I was a fireball of productivity for a fun impromptu meeting about one of my research specialties. Then we drank beer for a while and talked about things. I think it is easier to connect with people because we're all worried about losing our jobs and nervous about talking about the people who have already lost their jobs.

One thing that I sometimes notice in these things: in a meeting of 20 people, all were men. 18 were white guys, 1 was Asian, 1 was Middle Eastern. There's a frightening level of homogeneity in this business. It's a little worse in some other industries, but some days you feel like you are in Utah or something. It's troubling, though, that there are already very few women who work at the firm and they are so far removed from the roles where decisions are made.

New, not like This, but more like This.
