Today I bought an infrared thermometer. I had a $50 gift certificate to Radio Shack and it jumped out at me. It is a lot of fun. This is what I have discovered, after owning it for only a few hours:
-point it at a cloud: the temperature is like zero Fahrenheit
-the temperature variation on our grill is huge, from a low of about 250 degrees in one corner to about 550+ in the middle
-our family room has a ceiling that's about 18 or 20 feet high. It is 65.8 degrees on the carpet and 70.5 degrees on the ceiling. This confirms the idea that heat rises.
-the refrigerator has tremendous variation. In the back, where the cold air comes out, it's 29.5 degrees. Elsewhere, it's 42 degrees.
-on one of the rocks in our backyard, it's 110+ degrees, but the shaded part is only 72 to 75. This confirms the common folk wisdom that shade cools things down.
In conclusion: ifrared thermometer: very fun toy. And since it comes with a laser, it will also entertain your cat. Recommendation: STRONG BUY.
